Christmas is traditionally a time of year when families head for the theatre to enjoy both new and traditional Christmas shows - so for your entertainment, we’ve chosen some top shows which are perfect for the festive season.
Dickens’ ‘Christmas Carol’ has been a seasonal favourite since it was written in 1843 – and it translates wonderfully to the Arts Theatre stage. This absorbing and magical one-man show, starring Simon Callow, is based on Dickens’ own performance adaptation, and is suitable for all family members. It’s intimate, heart-warming and moving, capturing the hearts of young and old alike. A Christmas Carol is on from the 8th of December 2016 until the 7th of January 2017. Ticket prices start at £10.90 and are available here.
There’s enough dark, foggy mystery in this perennial J B Priestley play to make it a perfect seasonal must-see – and 2016 celebrates 70 years since it was first performed in the West End. Currently available at the Playhouse Theatre, the story tells of an inspector who disturbs a wealthy family during a dinner party, and his revelations shatter the family’s illusions about itself. An Inspector Calls is on until the 4th of February 2017. Ticket prices start from £18.25 and are available here.
A Raymond Briggs classic for nearly 20 years, ‘The Snowman’ charts the enchanting story of a friendship between a boy and his snowy companion – and the two have all sorts of magical adventures at the North Pole. Featuring the celebrated song ‘Walking in the Air’, this is an unmissable family favourite and is available over the festive season at the Peacock Theatre. The Snowman is on until the 1st of January 2017. Ticket prices start from £24pp and are available here.
This Hans Christian Andersen story has been transformed into an atmospheric, tender and charming dance theatre show, telling the story of a little street girl, who has nothing but a single match to keep her warm on the night before Christmas Eve. A story of hope and kindness, it will enthral adults and children alike. It is on at Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler’s Wells. The Little Match Girl is on from the 10th of December until the 30th of December 2016. Ticket prices start from £9 and are available here.
